Zimbabwe could be set to return to international football after the world football governing body, FIFA, decided to send a delegation to meet with the local sports governing body, the Sports and Recreation Commission (SRC) starting this Sunday.
The delegation will be accompanied by members from the continent body CAF and will be in the country from Sunday to Tuesday.
FIFA suspended Zimbabwe from international football last year following government interference in the running of local football after the SRC had suspended the Felton Kamambo-led ZIFA board on various allegations.
Since then, FIFA has called on the SRC to reinstate the suspended board members, but the Sports regulator has been adamant.
The meeting between the SRC and FIFA could culminate in the appointment of a normalisation committee to run the affairs of ZIFA in the lead-up to fresh elections and ultimately the lifting of the suspension by the world football body.
The global football governing body is expected to be in the country for three days during which they will also meet the SRC, Premier Soccer League clubs, representatives from the Footballers Union of Zimbabwe and other key stakeholders.
The delegation includes Zimbabwean Solomon Mudege, who is FIFA’s Head of Development Programmes Africa, and FIFA’s Regional Development Officer David Fani, who is a former president of the Botswana Football Association.
Sarah Solémalé, who is the Senior Governance Service Manager at the global football governing body is also expected to be part of the delegation, while the continental football governing body, CAF is also expected to send representatives for the fact-finding mission.
ZBC News was unable to obtain a comment from the Sports and Recreation Commission but has it on good authority that the delegation is coming following an invitation from the Sports regulator.
