Zimbabwe was gripped by shock on Wednesday evening after a helicopter crashed in the Marondera rural area, killing everyone aboard.
Within minutes, social media posts began claiming that businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, were among the victims. However, authorities had not officially identified any of the deceased by 8:30pm on 30 September 2026.
Therefore, claims announcing Chivayo and Muteke’s deaths remain unconfirmed, despite the fatal crash itself being confirmed by the Zimbabwe Republic Police and government spokesman Nick Mangwana.
What police confirmed about the Marondera crash
The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed that an aircraft crashed in the Marondera rural area at approximately 5pm.
“The ZRP confirms a plane crash in Marondera Rural area at 1700 hours. The aircraft had 6 occupants,” the initial police statement said.
Police added that emergency services had been deployed to the crash site. However, the statement did not identify the aircraft’s owner, registration, pilots or passengers.
Meanwhile, Mangwana later described the aircraft as a helicopter and confirmed that there were no survivors.
According to his update, the helicopter was carrying a prominent businessman, four other passengers and two pilots. That account places seven people aboard the aircraft, one more than the six occupants initially mentioned by police.
Authorities had not explained the difference between the two figures at the time of publication.
Wicknell Chivayo and Lucy Muteke not officially named
Several social media accounts identified the prominent businessman as Wicknell Chivayo. The same posts claimed that his wife, Lucy Muteke, was travelling with him.
Nevertheless, neither ZRP nor Mangwana mentioned Chivayo, Muteke or any other victim by name.
No statement confirming their involvement had been released by Chivayo’s family, representatives, Intratrek Zimbabwe or the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe.
The viral posts must therefore be treated as unverified until authorities or close family members release the names of those killed.
In fast-moving tragedies, incorrect names can spread before relatives have been informed. Consequently, publishing an unconfirmed death as established fact could cause unnecessary distress to families and friends.
Who is Wicknell Chivayo?
Wicknell Chivayo, widely known as Sir Wicknell, is one of Zimbabwe’s most recognisable businessmen and social media personalities.
The 43-year-old tycoon has built a large following by displaying luxury vehicles, private aircraft, designer clothes and expensive watches. He has also attracted attention through high-value donations to musicians, football administrators, churches and individuals.
Chivayo’s relationships with influential political and religious figures have kept him in the public spotlight. His name regularly dominates online discussions whenever he announces another vehicle donation or major purchase.
His wife, Lucy “Lulu” Muteke, also has strong connections to Marondera. Their traditional marriage celebrations attracted wide public attention in 2025.
Those connections may have contributed to the speed at which their names became linked to Wednesday’s crash. However, location and public profile alone do not confirm that they were aboard the helicopter.
No cause of the crash announced
Authorities had not disclosed where the helicopter departed from or where it was heading.
Furthermore, no information had been released about the weather conditions, the aircraft’s registration or the events immediately before it crashed.
An aviation investigation will be required to examine the wreckage, flight records, maintenance history and communications with the pilots. Investigators will also need to establish whether mechanical failure, weather or another factor caused the disaster.
Until that process begins, any claims about the cause remain speculation.
Zimbabwe awaits official identification
The confirmed loss of everyone aboard the helicopter has already turned the Marondera crash into a national tragedy.
However, the identities of the prominent businessman, four passengers and two pilots must come from authorities or their families.
For now, the accurate position is that a helicopter crashed in rural Marondera at about 5pm on Wednesday and there were no survivors. Reports naming Wicknell Chivayo and Lucy Muteke as victims had not been officially confirmed.
