South African DJ, record producer, singer, and songwriter, DJ Maphorisa has reportedly fired his legal team after a disagreement regarding his assault case.
A source told a local publication that the Blaqboy Music boss had to let his legal representation go because they agreed with the National Prosecuting Authority’s (NPA) proposal for him to attend anger management courses.
Maphorisa, real name Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, does not agree with his legal team to take anger management courses as he feels it will rob him of a chance to prove to the court and the public that he is innocent.
Maphorisa was granted R4 000 bail by the Randburg Magistrate’s Court in May for allegedly beating up and strangling his girlfriend and former Generations: The Legacy actress Thuli Phongolo during an argument at her home in Sandton, Johannesburg.
The former Rockville actress alleged in a police statement that Maphorisa became aggressive and punched her in her chest. He also allegedly slapped her across the face.
“He held me and took me to the balcony, and grabbed me aggressively by my neck,” the police statement read.
A source told the publication that the couple had fought in full view of patrons during one of his gigs the night before. Their argument was allegedly ensured after a man made advances at Thuli and promised to send her R40 000.
Although the actress filed a withdrawal statement the day after Maphorisa was arrested, her plea had not been finalized as the NPA needed time to investigate.
Before the first court appearance after receiving bail, the couple released a joint statement, saying they wanted to deal with the matter privately.
The matter was postponed in July and sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions.
Maphorisa is set to appear in court soon to find out if the NPA will prosecute him.
