Zimbabwean MP Job Sikhala is a free man. He has been sentenced to two years in prison wholly suspended for five years.
Sikhala was arrested in 2022 after attending the funeral of the Citizens for Coalition Change activist, Moreblessing Ali. His trial was linked to a video posted on the internet, where he allegedly implied that the ruling ZANU-PF had killed Ali.
He denied such allegations.
His lawyer, Harrison Nkomo says they are going to appeal the sentence as they want his acquittal.
“This is the only case that has been keeping him in custody. So, he is going to come out. In fact, let me say I don’t think I can say I am happy because the prosecution should have never happened in the first place. We must not glorify things that are wrong. My (respectful) view is that his arrest was not supposed to be effected. So, that being the case, we are not resting. We are going to take the matter to the high court on appeal. What we want is acquittal, not a conviction with al lighter sentence. No, we disagree,” says Nkomo.
