Three killed as haulage truck overturns after crashing into van in Harare

Harare, Zimbabwe – A devastating road accident occurred last night at the Dzivaresekwa turnoff traffic lights along Bulawayo Road in Harare, claiming three lives and leaving three others injured. The fatal crash involved a haulage truck that lost control, colliding with a van before overturning.

According to eyewitness accounts, the accident happened around 8:30 PM when a heavily loaded haulage truck failed to stop at the traffic lights. The truck, reportedly traveling at high speed, rammed into a van that was waiting at the intersection. Upon impact, the truck overturned, crushing part of the van and spilling cargo onto the road.

Emergency responders from the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) and Fire Brigade arrived promptly to manage the situation. Tragically, three individuals, including the van’s driver and two passengers, were pronounced dead at the scene. The injured were rushed to Parirenyatwa Hospital, where they are receiving treatment for serious injuries.

Several witnesses at the scene described the moment of impact as terrifying. “The truck seemed to be moving too fast as it approached the traffic lights,” said one commuter who was nearby. “It didn’t look like the driver was trying to slow down. The next thing we saw was the van being hit, and the truck overturned immediately after that.”

Another motorist, who had stopped at the intersection, said the crash was so loud that it could be heard from a distance. “The truck skidded before flipping onto its side. People started rushing to the scene to try and help, but the damage was already too severe.”

Authorities have not yet determined the exact cause of the accident, but preliminary investigations suggest that speeding and brake failure could have been contributing factors. The truck driver, who survived with injuries, is expected to assist police in their investigation.

Traffic safety experts have long warned about the dangers of haulage trucks speeding on urban roads. “These trucks require longer stopping distances, and when they fail to slow down in time, accidents like this become inevitable,” said a road safety official.

Following the accident, the Zimbabwe Traffic Safety Council urged drivers of heavy vehicles to exercise caution, especially when approaching busy intersections. “We continuously advise truck drivers to check their braking systems before setting out on long journeys,” said a spokesperson.

Additionally, some members of the public have called for stricter enforcement of speed limits and regular vehicle maintenance checks to prevent similar tragedies. Many believe that authorities should introduce more stringent penalties for reckless driving, especially for commercial vehicles that pose a greater risk on the roads.

The ZRP has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. A full accident report will be released after forensic experts examine the wreckage and interview survivors. Meanwhile, the families of the deceased are left mourning their loved ones, who lost their lives in the tragic incident. Funeral arrangements are currently underway, and support is being provided to the grieving relatives.

This accident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers on Zimbabwean roads, particularly concerning heavy-duty trucks operating in urban areas. Road users are urged to remain vigilant, adhere to traffic regulations, and report any signs of reckless driving to authorities. As investigations continue, the nation mourns yet another avoidable loss of life on its roads.
