Three notorious serial armed robbers were sentenced to a total of 146 years in prison by Harare Magistrate Clever Tsikwa following their conviction on multiple charges of robbery and attempted murder.

Darlington Maruba, aged 40, William Boka, aged 39, and Kudakwashe Boka engaged in a reign of terror across Harare, targeting residents for their money and possessions, often leaving victims severely injured or near death.

William Boka received a 10-year jail term for one count of armed robbery, with the magistrate suspending two years, leaving him to serve eight years effectively.

Maruba, convicted on five counts of armed robbery, was sentenced to 10 years for each count, totaling 50 years. Six years were suspended for five years on good behavior conditions, resulting in an effective sentence of 44 years. Additionally, Maruba was sentenced to eight years for attempted murder, bringing his total jail time to 53 years.

Kudakwashe Boka, found guilty on ten counts of armed robbery, was sentenced to seven years for each count, totaling 70 years. Eight years were suspended under similar conditions, resulting in an effective sentence of 62 years. He was also convicted on three counts of attempted murder, each carrying an eight-year sentence, leading to a total sentence of 86 years.

According to investigating officer Brian Maigeta, the trio specialized in highway robberies along Mutare, Seke, and Bulawayo roads, targeting motorists, especially those stranded due to breakdowns.

State prosecutor Loveit Muringwa presented evidence that detailed their crimes, including an incident where they assaulted Arthur Taruvinga and stole his belongings while he awaited assistance with a stranded vehicle on Mutare Road.

In another case, the robbers threatened Phillip Mugayi at gunpoint, stole money from him, and fired a shot when his son arrived, causing the victims to flee to safety and report the incident to the authorities.

These convictions mark a significant victory against organized crime in Harare, aiming to restore safety and security for its residents affected by the trio’s violent actions.
