Donald Trump swiftly responded to President Joe Biden’s unexpected decision to withdraw from the upcoming presidential election. In a statement provided to NBC News on Sunday, July 21, the 78-year-old former president criticized Biden, who is 81, asserting that Biden “should never have been [in office] in the first place.”
“There has never been a president who has caused such extensive damage to our country, from energy independence to the influx of millions of illegal immigrants,” Trump conveyed in his statement to NBC News. “He should have remained in his basement.”
Shortly after, Trump took to Truth Social to further assail Biden, referring to him as “crooked Joe” and labeling him as “by far, the worst president in the history of our nation.”
“From the outset, he was unfit for office, but those around him deceived America regarding his severe mental, physical, and cognitive decline,” Trump alleged. “Whoever the Left nominates next will only perpetuate the same issues. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Biden’s decision to step aside from the 2024 presidential race follows public calls from numerous Democrats urging him to resign. Despite these calls, the veteran politician maintained his resolve to continue his candidacy. Following a lackluster debate with Trump in June, the White House defended Biden’s standing in the race. Moreover, the president made several televised appearances and press briefings to demonstrate his readiness for another term in office.
However, following an assassination attempt on Trump during a rally in Pennsylvania, Biden addressed the nation, emphasizing the need to avoid violence stemming from political divisions. Despite his previous stance, Biden ultimately chose to withdraw from the presidential race through a public letter.
“Being your President has been the greatest honor of my life,” Biden wrote. “While I had intended to seek re-election, I believe it is now best for my party and the nation for me to step down and focus entirely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term.”
Biden indicated plans to address the nation later in the week to elaborate on his decision. He expressed gratitude to Vice President Kamala Harris, describing her as an exceptional partner in their shared endeavors.
“Lastly, I want to thank the American people for their faith and trust in me,” Biden concluded. “I continue to believe in the limitless potential of America, and together, as the United States of America, there is nothing we cannot achieve.”
