Fatal bridge collapse in China claims 12 lives, injures dozens

A bridge collapse in northern China, caused by torrential rains, resulted in the tragic deaths of 12 individuals, with over 30 others reported missing, according to state media on Saturday. Recent heavy rains have ravaged parts of northern and central China, leading to widespread flooding and extensive damage. The bridge in Shaanxi province collapsed late Friday due to sudden heavy downpours and flash floods, as reported by state news agency Xinhua.

All 12 victims from Shangluo City were found inside five vehicles recovered from the river beneath the collapsed bridge. As of now, 31 people are still missing, and initial investigations suggest that 17 cars and eight trucks fell into the river during the incident. Television footage showed a section of the bridge partially submerged under the rushing river.

An eyewitness recounted how warnings from other drivers prevented him from crossing the bridge in time. “A truck in front of me didn’t stop and fell into the water,” said the witness, identified as Mr. Meng. Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for comprehensive rescue and relief efforts to locate those still missing.

According to CCTV, more than 30 individuals were reported missing in Sichuan province after a violent thunderstorm triggered flash flooding in Ya’an town on Saturday. Elsewhere, in Shaanxi’s Baoji city, at least five people were confirmed dead and eight were reported missing after the rains caused flooding and mudslides on Friday.

State television aired footage of neighborhoods submerged in muddy water, with residents and excavators working to clear the damage. China has been experiencing extreme weather this summer, with heavy rains affecting the east and south while the north suffers from successive heatwaves.

Scientists attribute the increased frequency and intensity of these extreme weather events to climate change, exacerbated by greenhouse gas emissions. In a similar incident in May, a highway collapse in southern China claimed 48 lives following days of incessant rain. Additionally, earlier this month, a tornado struck a town in eastern China, resulting in one fatality, 79 injuries, and extensive damage.
