Zim Hip-Hop star makes waves in South Africa

In the vibrant cultural landscape of Polokwane, South Africa, a new musical force is making waves with an unapologetic and authentic approach to hip-hop and poetry. Mercy Dhliwayo, the Zimbabwean artist and creative writer known as Sista X, has recently released a new single, “Eargasms,” which is already stirring excitement among music enthusiasts.

Originally from Emakhandeni, Bulawayo, Sista X has made Polokwane her home for several years. Her latest single, “Eargasms,” which dropped on July 12, is a powerful testament to her lyrical prowess and dedication to hip-hop in its purest form. According to Sista X, the track is “an unapologetic stand for hip-hop,” designed to offer “eargasms for the truest heads.”

“Eargasms” is part of her upcoming EP, set to be released before the end of the month. The EP features three singles: “Elements,” “My X,” and “Eargasms.” Each track showcases different facets of Sista X’s artistry and addresses significant themes.

The first single, “Elements,” explores themes of female empowerment, sexuality, and autonomy. Sista X describes it as a declaration of female strength and independence, challenging traditional societal expectations that often place women in submissive roles. This track sets a powerful tone for the EP, reflecting Sista X’s commitment to both personal and social empowerment.

“My X,” released on May 24, 2024, aligns with the celebration of Africa Day and critiques contemporary African politics. The song addresses the ongoing effects of colonialism and the detrimental impact of corrupt leadership on the continent. Sista X uses “My X” to highlight the importance of each vote cast, viewing the ballot box as a symbol of hope for change in a struggling political landscape.

Sista X’s return to the music scene this year marks a strong resurgence compared to her debut album, “X Agenda,” released in 2019. The album, which features a blend of spoken word and rap, was largely produced by Zimbabwean producer 6ixBeats (Godknows Mutarutse of Planet 6ix Records) and included contributions from artists and producers across Zimbabwe and South Africa. The album’s eclectic mix of underground hip-hop, poetry, and reggae was well-received, further establishing her presence in the music industry.

Looking ahead, Sista X has expressed her desire to collaborate with a range of artists. She dreams of working with Mokoomba, Indigo Saint, and O.Gz like Munetsi and Few Kingz. Her admiration extends to Mandy Mae, M.U.S.E, Msiz Kay, and Nisha T, as well as international artists like Narubi Selah. These potential collaborations highlight her ambition to blend diverse musical influences and expand her reach within the global music community. Sista X’s journey from Bulawayo to Polokwane is a testament to her resilience and passion for her craft. With her latest release and forthcoming EP, she continues to push boundaries and inspire listeners with her authentic voice and bold artistic vision.
