The family of acclaimed South African actress Connie Chiume has issued a heartfelt statement expressing their gratitude to the public for their support and condolences following her recent death. The actress, known for her impactful roles on both stage and screen, passed away on Tuesday afternoon at Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg after a period of illness.

“The Chiume family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude for all the messages of support and condolences during this difficult time, as they cope with the loss of their mother, Connie,” the family said in their statement. Born in Welkom, Connie Chiume initially pursued a career in nursing before transitioning to acting in 1977. She moved to Greece to join the cast of the musical “Sola Sola,” marking the beginning of her illustrious acting career. Chiume gained prominence in South Africa with her role as Thembi in the popular series “Inkom’ Edla Yodwa” in 1989. She further endeared herself to audiences through her performances in television shows like “Rhythm City” and “Gomora.”

Chiume’s contributions to the arts were widely recognized and celebrated. She received several prestigious awards throughout her career, including the NTVA Avanti Award for Best Actress in a Drama Series for “Soul City” in 2000 and the SAFTA for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama for “Zone 14” in 2009.

Her passing marks the end of a remarkable career and leaves behind a legacy of exceptional talent and dedication to the craft of acting. The public’s outpouring of support reflects the deep impact she had on both the entertainment industry and the hearts of many fans.
