Naomi Campbell has been banned from serving as a charity trustee for five years after an inquiry by the Charity Commission uncovered significant financial misconduct at her charity, Fashion for Relief. This investigation revealed that the organization raised nearly £4.8 million from high-profile fundraising events but allocated only £389,000 to good causes after covering its expenses.
The inquiry highlighted that Fashion for Relief inappropriately spent tens of thousands on luxury accommodations, flights, spa treatments, personal security, and even cigarettes for Campbell. Additionally, substantial unauthorized consultancy fees, amounting to £290,000, were paid to fellow trustee Bianka Hellmich, who has been disqualified for nine years.
The report indicated that over five years, the charity’s financial management was severely lacking, with chaotic record-keeping and no full-time staff. Notably, Fashion for Relief failed to promptly pay Save the Children €450,000 (£375,000) raised at a 2017 event, with outstanding funds being cleared only after the intervention of interim managers.
The Charity Commission’s investigation commenced in November 2021, leading to the charity’s eventual winding up in March. Tim Hopkins, the commission’s assistant director for investigations, emphasized the legal responsibilities of trustees and the failures identified in Campbell and her fellow trustees’ actions. A statement from Save the Children expressed gratitude for the inquiry, noting that their partnership with Fashion for Relief ended in 2018, and they have no plans to collaborate in the future. As of now, Campbell and Hellmich have not publicly commented on the findings.
