The Qwabe Twins, Viggy and Virginia, have inspired young girls and female artists to follow their lead in preserving their virginity. The 26-year-old duo participated in the recent annual reed dance, known as Umkhosi Womhlanga, which celebrates cultural heritage and virginity.
The ceremony, held at the royal palace of Enyokeni, draws maidens from across the region who pass a virginity test and carry reeds in procession to Zulu King MisuZulu KaZwelithini. The Qwabe twins expressed the importance of the event, stating, “We are motivating and showing women our age that you can be a known musician, but also preserve your virginity. The reed dance is very important and has played a pivotal role in our lives.”
However, the twins voiced their disappointment over transportation issues that prevented many girls from attending. “It was very disappointing and hurtful to see many maidens who had been preparing all year for the event left behind due to inadequate transport,” they lamented.
The Qwabe Twins’ message emphasizes the significance of cultural traditions while advocating for the empowerment and self-respect of young women in their community.
