Kwaito star Sandile Ngwenya, popularly known as Mapaputsi, has passed away. His manager, Busi Kunene, confirmed the sad news to TshisaLIVE, revealing that the singer died on Thursday night. A formal press statement and media briefing will be issued in due course.
Mapaputsi, renowned for his hit single “Izinja,” had been battling health issues for over a year. Despite showing some signs of improvement recently, he ultimately succumbed to his illness. A close friend of the artist, who chose to remain anonymous, shared with TshisaLIVE that while Mapaputsi had appeared to be on the mend, he had been in considerable pain and was looking forward to performing during the festive season.
Another friend expressed their deep sadness, saying, “We are heartbroken by the news. We thought it was a hoax but we’ve seen it’s true. uMnganami (my friend) is no more, he lost the fight for recovery.”
Just last month, Mapaputsi had addressed rumors about his health through a video posted on his WhatsApp status. In the video, he denied claims that he was bedridden, asserting that he was in Durban and actively engaging with his fans. He said, “Baphi laba, baphi laba…bathi ubani osembhedeni? (Where are they, where are they…they say I’m bedridden?) Angizwanga…mina ngise Durban mos, awufuna uku’booker book see you soon (Excuse me…I’m in Durban, if you want to book, book see you soon), I’m in Durban having a good time. Baphi laba banxamba amanga ngise Durban, indaba yabo okuthi family family umuntu ulele phansi I don’t know (Where are they, they are lying about me, I’m in Durban, their news about family saying I’m bedridden I don’t know).”
Mapaputsi’s death marks a significant loss in the Kwaito music community. His unique contributions to the genre and his vibrant presence will be remembered by fans and fellow artists alike. Further details about his passing and memorial arrangements are expected to be shared by his management soon.
