NRZ suspends South-East railway line operations due to severe flood damage

The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) has temporarily suspended operations on its South-East railway line after severe track damage caused by persistent rainfall. The affected routes include the Rutenga-Mbizi and Rutenga-Beitbridge sections, where heavy rains have caused significant washouts. The situation has prompted NRZ to focus on urgent repairs in order to restore full service along the vital corridor.

In an official statement, NRZ acknowledged that the heavy rainfall has led to considerable damage, particularly along the South-East line. The relentless water flow has exceeded the capacity of existing drainage systems, causing sections of the track to wash away. The damage, affecting approximately 480 meters of track, has left parts of the railway network severely compromised.

“Currently, we are experiencing washouts on some parts of our lines, particularly the South-East line. The heavy rainfall has resulted in water flow exceeding the capacity of existing drainage structures,” NRZ stated in its report. The damage is described as particularly severe, with 360 meters of track lost along the Rutenga-Mbizi section and 120 meters washed out on the Rutenga-Beitbridge line. In some areas, the washouts have created deep gullies, reaching depths of up to two meters, further complicating the repair process.

The NRZ highlighted that the damage to the railway infrastructure was exacerbated by the region’s topography, which makes it more vulnerable to washouts and flooding during heavy rains. The railway line runs through areas where the terrain has proven to be prone to water flow disruptions during rainfall. In the statement, NRZ noted that while similar incidents have occurred in previous years, the current damage surpasses anything they have encountered before.

“The area is susceptible to such incidents because of its natural topographic formation,” NRZ explained. “Although we have previously experienced similar washouts in this corridor, including on the Mozambican side, this recent event has been the worst we have seen.”

In recent years, the impact of climate change has become increasingly evident, with more frequent and intense weather events, including heavy rainfall, affecting infrastructure worldwide. Zimbabwe has not been exempt from these climate-related changes, and the South-East line has shown signs of vulnerability to the shifting weather patterns. With climate change intensifying rainfall patterns and causing unexpected weather extremes, NRZ has had to adjust its approach to managing these challenges to maintain the safety and functionality of the national railway system.

Despite the extent of the damage, NRZ has made significant progress in repairing the affected areas. According to the statement, 90% of the damaged track has already been realigned, signaling that the railway company is taking swift action to address the issue. NRZ has dispatched wagons carrying ballast and quarry fines from the Nalatale Quarry Mine in Shangani to aid in the repair process. These materials are critical in stabilizing the track and ensuring that it can withstand future weather events.

NRZ has assured the public that no injuries have been reported among staff members, and no damage has occurred to rolling stock. The swift response from NRZ’s team highlights the company’s commitment to ensuring that safety and reliability remain priorities, even in the face of adverse weather conditions.

As the impacts of climate change continue to intensify, infrastructure resilience has become a focal point for industries around the world, including the transport sector. NRZ’s ongoing repair efforts underscore the importance of adapting to the changing climate and improving infrastructure to withstand increasingly severe weather events. With climate experts predicting more extreme weather patterns in the years ahead, the railway sector in Zimbabwe, along with other infrastructure providers, must prioritize strengthening systems to maintain smooth operations during adverse conditions.

NRZ‘s efforts in responding to the current crisis reflect a forward-thinking approach to resilience and recovery. By working to restore the South-East railway line and prevent further damage, NRZ aims to ensure that its services can resume safely and reliably. The railway company is committed to maintaining the flow of goods and passengers across the region, vital for economic stability and growth. While the immediate focus is on the repairs, NRZ’s response also serves as a reminder of the ongoing need for investments in infrastructure that can withstand the challenges posed by climate change.
