Wicknell Chivayo has once again ignited controversy and public debate after claiming to have purchased a brand-new Gulfstream G700 private jet, reportedly worth a staggering US$79 million. The claim, made through a series of flashy social media posts over the weekend, has reignited questions surrounding the origin of Chivayo’s immense wealth and his alleged political connections.`s
The Gulfstream G700 is one of the most luxurious and technologically advanced business jets on the market, with a base price of US$79 million. Depending on interior customisations and features, the cost can soar to as much as US$95 million. Chivayo says his jet will feature a custom inscription, “WMC 777”, combining his initials with the number seven, which he frequently references in public as a symbol of spiritual and personal significance.
In a video posted to his Instagram and Facebook pages, Chivayo proudly displayed a model of the jet and proclaimed, “You’ll hear someone say Sir Wicknell is a runner. Where have you ever seen a runner who can buy a private jet? This is pure work. Only witches hate this.”
His statement appeared to be a direct rebuttal to longstanding claims that he is a “runner”—a proxy used by powerful political figures, particularly those close to President Emmerson Mnangagwa, to secure lucrative government contracts and funnel state funds through private hands. Chivayo has consistently denied these allegations, presenting himself instead as a self-made businessman and successful entrepreneur.
Despite his denials, Chivayo’s name has often surfaced in connection with controversial government deals. He has been linked to murky state tenders in sectors such as energy, mining, procurement of election materials, and the supply of medical equipment. Some observers allege that his close proximity to Zimbabwe’s political elite has allowed him to operate with impunity, benefitting from deals that are rarely subjected to public scrutiny.
In a leaked audio that circulated widely in 2023, Chivayo was heard claiming he had President Mnangagwa “in the palm of his hand”—a remark that further intensified speculation about his real influence within the corridors of power.
Wicknell Chivayo Claims US$79 Million Jet Purchase, Sparks Fresh Debate Over Source of Wealth
His latest display of wealth has divided public opinion. Some supporters applauded the show of success, calling it inspirational and a testament to what hard work can achieve. Others, however, expressed outrage, pointing to the deepening economic crisis in Zimbabwe, where inflation, high unemployment, and collapsing public services continue to plague millions of citizens.
“It’s tone-deaf and insulting,” said one X (formerly Twitter) user. “People are struggling to afford bread, and here’s someone flaunting a US$79 million jet. It’s not just about wealth; it’s about the lack of accountability.”
Another user commented, “He always says it’s hard work, but never explains what exactly he does. Meanwhile, he’s constantly linked to shady deals. It’s time for transparency.”
Chivayo remains defiant. In another clip from his weekend video, he spoke in Shona: “Zvishandwa izvi. Zvovengwa nemuroyi chete,” which translates loosely to, “This is the fruit of hard work. Only a witch would resent it.” His dismissive tone toward critics suggests he has no intention of backing down or toning down his ostentatious lifestyle.
No official confirmation has been made regarding the purchase of the Gulfstream G700. There is no indication yet that aviation authorities or independent sources have verified the transaction. However, such aircrafts are typically delivered after months of production and registration processes, meaning public records—if any—may only surface later.
The Gulfstream G700, launched in 2019, is prized for its ultra-luxurious interiors, long-range flight capacity, and cutting-edge avionics. It can fly non-stop from New York to Johannesburg, and is often used by billionaires, heads of state, and Fortune 500 executives.
While Chivayo continues to court attention and admiration from some quarters, the spectacle of his wealth has once again drawn scrutiny to the broader issue of inequality and perceived corruption in Zimbabwe. For many, his claim underscores a troubling disconnect between the country’s elite and the struggles of ordinary citizens.
Still, Chivayo appears undeterred. Promising more “big moves” in future posts, he has dared his critics to challenge him and continues to position himself as a symbol of success—however controversial that may be.
As speculation swirls and more questions than answers remain, one thing is clear: Wicknell Chivayo knows how to keep the nation talking.
