Local Government Minister July Moyo is attending the SADC Committee of Ministers responsible for disaster management in the Democratic Republic of Congo the current SADC chair.
The meeting is aimed at taking stock of the decisions made by Heads of State and Government, Council of Ministers and the Ministers responsible for disaster management to expedite on the implementation of the same.
More focus is on operationalisation of the SADC humanitarian Operations centre ( SHOC) in Nakala Mozambique as a way of ramping up coordination of Disasters in the SADC region.
Tools to assist in the operationalisation of the SHOC such as the multi-hazard contigency plan and the disaster fund have also been discussed.
An interim team seconded by member states is already in place drawn from countries such as Mozambique Botswana and Zambia.
The intention was to kick-start the operations of the same.
The prevalence of disasters in this wake of climate change has seen loss of lives and property to the extent of threatening development in the SADC region.
Issues to do with Zunotics, epidemics, pandemics, effects of climate change, water resources management and the disaster situation in the region have also been discussed at the summit.
The meeting comes at a time Malawi and the DRC have been ravaged by floods. Zimbabwe has shown soliderity with Malawi by sending aid under the Zim- aid banner.
Minister Moyo has also also reiterated President ED Mnangagwa’s intention to support the Democratic Republic of Congo during these trying times.
Debated decisions include taking advantage of the Tampere Convention on Risk Communication, operationalisation of the SHOC, Peer Review mechanism, enhancing vulnerability Assessment among many others.
Minister Moyo also paid a courtesy call on the Zimbabwean embassy where he had meetings with Ambassador Johanes Tomana.
As the Minister responsible for Government buildings, he toured, for appreciation, the Zimbabwean embassy in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
