Mzansi’s Maphorisa, known as Themba Sekowe by his school classmates, has lost patience with the government and his critics at large. Having driven the heights of the Amapiano genre since 2020, the 35-year-old from Soshanguve in Pretoria believes that the government is getting in the way of artists’ work and money.
Maphorisa is aware that Amapiano is enjoying its international zenith but the challenge of work VISA’s has forced event cancellations.
“I love to see people growing, Amapiano artist/djs are doing more international gigs now which means we represent Sauta Arts n Culture should be doing something about this, we need ur support not just moneym,” Maphorisa said via X (formally known as Twitter). We struggling with getting VISAS [sic] we spend too much money to get them,” the co-creator of the smash hit Mnike added.
“If u can create a system where we can get visas easy cause some artists/djs get declined. The flag Must Go High Speaking my mind Arts n Culture please take care of Amapiano Danko Making additional points, Maphorisa took a couple of shots at local musicians about their silence on the VISA hitches and his supposed gate-keeping of the Amapiano genre. Don’t just read that tweet n mize (ignore) I’m fighting for you here,” he added.
“I’m the reason why artists get good deals with labels cause I showed them how to do it for free even,” he said. “I’m game a changer. I made artists to have a big appetite when it comes to music business Tell me if I’m lying n why if I’m
Won’t forget the day I gave Kabza Sponono it change the whole african movement. Use ur brains Wizkid Burna boy Madumoney CasspeeNyovi in one song a u crazy Porry gatekeeping ????? Sponono was the birth of Asake new sound it opened doors for all. Look at how Africans dance now ??? I Will definitely count myself in with or without u,” Maphorisa added.
