Wicknell Chivayo faces backlash for alleged vote-buying tactics ahead of ZIFA elections

Controversial Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo has come under fire for allegedly attempting to influence the upcoming Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) presidential elections through a dubious offer. Just days before the elections, Chivayo pledged to provide brand-new vehicles for all 78 ZIFA councillors, on the condition that they vote for Nqobile Magwizi, a presidential candidate. The businessman’s offer has stirred outrage in the football community, with critics accusing him of attempting to manipulate the election through vote-buying tactics.

Magwizi, who works at Sakunda Holdings and is aligned with influential Zanu PF figures, including Kudakwashe Tagwirei, is facing a competitive field in the presidential race. His opponents include well-known figures such as Twine Phiri, Marshall Gore, Philemon Machana, and Makwinji Soma Phiri. Despite the intense competition, Wicknell Chivayo’s public pledge has raised eyebrows, with many questioning his true motives.

“If Nqobile Magwizi wins, I’m committed to making bold contributions to support his vision for football,” Wicknell Chivayo declared. Praising Magwizi for his “visionary leadership, integrity, and professionalism,” Wicknell Chivayo promised a range of financial and material contributions, including a US$200,000 Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Series for the incoming president, new vehicles for every ZIFA councilor, and a substantial US$10 million sponsorship for grassroots football development.

While Wicknell Chivayo’s offer might appear generous on the surface, it has sparked a wave of criticism across Zimbabwe. Critics are calling the businessman’s actions an attempt to buy votes and manipulate the outcome of the election. “This is a really sad day for football,” said Marondera Central MP Caston Matewu, who has been vocal in his condemnation of Wicknell Chivayo’s actions. He called for an immediate investigation by ZIFA’s ethics committee and urged the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) to closely scrutinize Chivayo’s financial dealings. The MP questioned the businessman’s tax contributions, raising concerns about the integrity of his business practices.

Magwizi’s main rival, Martin Kweza, caused a further stir by withdrawing from the race on Saturday morning, just days before the election. Reports suggest that Kweza faced pressure from powerful figures within the political establishment to step aside in favor of Magwizi, further fueling suspicions of undue political interference in the election. Kweza’s withdrawal has added a layer of complexity to an already heated race and has led many to speculate about the true forces at play behind the scenes.

The allegations of vote-buying and political manipulation have drawn comparisons to the tenure of former ZIFA president Philip Chiyangwa, whose controversial leadership was marked by accusations of disqualifying opponents and manipulating elections. In a dramatic turn of events, Chiyangwa was ultimately defeated by the relatively unknown Felton Kamambo, suggesting that ZIFA councilors might ultimately prioritize authenticity and genuine commitment to football over external influence.

“They vote for the candidate who is relatable, protects their interests, and is truly for football,” explained Harare-based Warriors supporter Tendai Savanhu. His statement echoes the sentiments of many football fans in Zimbabwe, who feel that the election should focus on the future of the sport rather than being driven by political agendas or financial incentives.

With the election just days away, the controversy surrounding Wicknell Chivayo’s offer raises important questions about the integrity of the ZIFA election process. Will the councilors stand firm in their commitment to the development of Zimbabwean football, or will they be swayed by the temptation of luxury vehicles and promises of financial backing?

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how this dramatic and controversial pre-election maneuver will affect the outcome of the ZIFA presidential race. The football community, along with concerned Zimbabweans, will be watching closely to see if the election will be decided by the best candidate for the sport or by the weight of financial promises.
