Sangoma Blesses Macheso With Unexpected Cash Gift

Mvurwi, ZimbabweLegendary Sungura musician Alick Macheso received an unexpected but spirited show of support on Friday night after prominent Glendale-based traditional healer Sekuru Nyangatayani, born Peter Chimbizi, showered him and his band with US dollar bills during a high-energy performance at Shamwari Joe Hotel in Mvurwi.

The venue was packed with fans from across Mashonaland Central, many of whom had come specifically to witness Macheso, affectionately known as Baba Sharo, light up the stage with his signature bass guitar grooves and nostalgic hits. But it was Sekuru Nyangatayani’s public display of loyalty and generosity that stole part of the spotlight.

As soon as he began playing some of his older fan-favourite tracks, the traditional healer approached the stage and began splashing cash—not for the first time. Known for such gestures, he said his appreciation stems from deep admiration for Macheso’s legacy in Sungura music.

Macheso is my mentor,” said Sekuru Nyangatayani. “As an upcoming Sungura artiste, I feel spiritually and musically moved every time he performs his old songs. They remind me of why I fell in love with this genre. That’s when I feel compelled to show gratitude by giving him and his band money.”

Nyangatayani is not just a fan—he is a Sungura hopeful himself. He has begun recording music and says he draws heavy inspiration from two musical giants: the late Tongai Moyo and the ever-present Macheso. He praised Macheso for nurturing young talent, especially in giving a platform to Tongai Moyo’s son, Peter Moyo, who has been joining him on tour.

I was inspired by the late Tongai Moyo, and I’ll forever cherish his contribution to our culture,” he added. “Today, I salute Macheso for continuing that legacy. Bringing Peter on stage is a sign of love, mentorship, and respect for the art.”

As he and his Orchestra Mberikwazvo band delivered a performance filled with crowd-pleasers, dancing, and sing-alongs, the atmosphere turned festive. However, the night briefly took a tense turn when suspected thieves attempted to break into Macheso’s car, which was parked behind the hotel.

Ever-alert security guards spotted the suspicious movement and immediately took action, chasing the would-be thieves away before any damage was done. The situation was quickly controlled, and Macheso addressed it openly on stage.

Some thieves tried to break into my car in the backyard, but the security was alert. We’re safe here,” he told the cheering audience, reassuring fans who may have been concerned.

The drama did little to dampen the mood as fans continued to dance late into the night. The energy was electric, and many were thrilled not only by the musical showcase but also by the interaction between Macheso and his passionate supporters like Sekuru Nyangatayani.

The event marked one of the biggest turnouts for Shamwari Joe Hotel, and venue owner Barbra Mukombwe could hardly contain her joy at the overwhelming support.

It was a full house!” she said excitedly. “We are grateful to he and his team for coming through and to all the fans who made this night special. It was a beautiful event, and we hope to bring you more memorable nights like this in the near future.”

The continued collaboration between established legends like Macheso and rising figures such as Sekuru Nyangatayani reflects the enduring power of Sungura music to unite generations and inspire new talent. Events like this not only highlight musical brilliance but also foster a deeper cultural appreciation and community spirit.

As Macheso continues to tour and promote his music, it’s clear that his influence goes far beyond the stage—and the admiration from supporters like Nyangatayani proves that his impact is as spiritual as it is musical.
