Baba and Amai Charamba celebrates 25 years of marriage

Despite the fact that most celebrity marriages fail to last the distance, there are some famous couples who have defied the stereotype. Today we celebrate Zimbabwe’s gospel power couple Pastor Charles Charamba and his wife who are celebrating 25 years of marriage.

The multi-award winning gospel duo which is celebrating a silver jubilee in marriage, met in 1995 and started off as acquaintances before getting married in 1997.

Theirs is a tale of choir members who secretly admired each other as they went for crusades and choir sessions.

“We met at St Mary’s Apostolic Faith Mission church in Chitungwiza and we became friends. Both of us were in the church choir and we were also crusaders. I then invited Mai Charamba to be part of my musical group Fishers of Men, as a backing vocalist before we fell in love and got married in 1997,” said Baba Charamba.

The revered couple shares some nuggets that have made it possible for their union to survive this long.

Mai Charamba, “The secret to the success of our marriage is God. God is the one who ordained marriage and we put him first. Without him a marriage will not survive. Couples should also accept each other’s differences and celebrate each other’s successes. We should not look down upon each other as couple, we should complement each other and desist from comparing our partners to other people.”

Baba Charamba ,“Marriage has no formula. What works for us might not work for the next person. Some say it’s good to marry your best friend, but to some it doesn’t work. The key to a successful marriage is God since he is the one who ordained marriage.”

The Charambas who are blessed with five children, including musicians Shalom and Eternity, have a flourishing music career laced with multiple awards, earning them the moniker the First Family of Gospel Music.

Following in the footsteps of the Charambas is the youthful celebrity couple of Tendai Manatsa and Selmor Mtukudzi who got married in 2007.
