Body of the late National Hero Cde Kabasa flown to his rural home in Mutoko

THE body of the late National Hero Cde Abraham Kabasa has been flown to his rural home in Mutoko this Friday.

People of Mutoko in Mashonaland East Province will have any opportunity to bid farewell to one of their own after the body of the late National Hero Cde Abraham Kabasa was flown to his rural home this Friday.

The body was taken from Zimbabwe Defence Forces Parlour at Charles Gumbo Barracks accompanied by relatives, colleagues and government officials.

The wife to the late National Hero Cde Kabasa, Mrs Mirriam Kabasa said the late National Hero was a loving and caring man.

“My husband was someone who was so loving and caring. He was a family unifier who always wanted to see his family united,” she said.

“We have lost a great man. I also want to thank the government for giving a befitting honor to my husband and it was always his wish that one day he be declared a national hero,” she added.

Ministry of Home affairs and cultural heritage Director Finance Mr Xavier Chiseko gave an update of burial arrangements.

“Today the body of the National hero will be taken to his rural home where a church service will be held,” said Mr Chiseko.

“Tomorrow the body will be taken to Chikondoma Stadium so that his relatives and friends will have an opportunity to bid him a farewell. After that the body will be flown back in Harare where it will lie in state here at Charles Gumbo Barracks ahead of burial on Monday,” he added.

Born in Mutoko in 1932, Cde Kabasa died on Saturday at his home in Waterfalls after battling cancer for a long time.

A medical practitioner by profession, Cde Kabasa assisted freedom fighters by supplying medical drugs, shoes and clothes between 1976 and 1979.

He would treat wounded freedom fighters in undercover operations.

Upon the attainment of independence, Cde Kabasa became one of the ten Members of parliament for Mashonaland East province in 1980.

He also served as the Deputy Speaker of Parliament and in 1990, he was appointed Mashonaland East Governor.

Cde Kabasa’s body will this Friday lie in state at his rural home in Mutoko.

On Saturday, the body of the late national hero will be taken to Chikondoma Stadium in Mutoko to give Mashonaland East Province a chance to bid farewell to one of their own, before the body is flown back to Harare where it will lie in state at Charles Gumbo Barracks ahead of burial on Monday at the National Shrine.

Cde Kabasa who was the former Mashonaland East Governor is survived by his wife Mirriam Kabasa, 11 children and 19 grandchildren.
