UZ student Blessing Gwekwe invent sorghum pasta

Blessing Gwekwe, a student at the University of Zimbabwe, has recently made waves with his innovative invention of sorghum-based pasta. His creation offers a unique take on the traditional Italian staple while also promoting the use of local ingredients in Zimbabwean cuisine.

Sorghum, a cereal crop widely cultivated in Zimbabwe, is known for its high nutritional value and adaptability to diverse growing conditions. However, it has yet to gain widespread popularity as a staple food item due to the dominance of imported wheat-based products. Gwekwe saw an opportunity to change this by experimenting with sorghum flour and creating a pasta recipe that not only tasted delicious but was also gluten-free.

His journey to creating the perfect sorghum pasta recipe was not without its challenges. Initially, Gwekwe struggled to find the right combination of ingredients that would allow the pasta to hold its shape and texture. However, through trial and error and feedback from friends and family, he was eventually able to develop a recipe that worked.

He believes that by encouraging the use of local crops, Zimbabwe can reduce its reliance on imported food items and boost its agricultural sector.

With his sorghum pasta gaining popularity and recognition, Gwekwe plans to continue exploring new ways to incorporate local ingredients into Zimbabwean cuisine. He hopes that her invention will inspire others to innovate and experiment with local crops, ultimately leading to a more sustainable and diverse food system in Zimbabwe.

Blessing Gwekwe’s invention of sorghum-based pasta is a testament to the power of innovation and the potential of local ingredients. His success is not only a personal achievement but also a step towards promoting food security and sustainability in Zimbabwe. We can only hope that her example inspires others to follow in her footsteps and explore the possibilities of local ingredients in their own food creations.
