TT Mbah encourages SA to donate matric farewell outfits to pupils in need

Thato “TT” Mbha is appealing for matric farewell outfits to be donated to help make the special day memorable for less fortunate pupils. The media personality has partnered with Sortbet and Amatyma wellness network to launch the A Chance for a Dance drive that encourages people to give back.

“One thing that has driven me to agree to this initiative is the giving element of it. Those that have experienced a matric dance know how special it is. I was attracted to the idea because not everyone can afford to buy a suit and all. We have a lot of these learners that end up not going because affordability is not on their side,” he tells TshisaLIVE.

Recalling his special day which took place in 1996, Thato said he was grateful to have been privileged enough to have been able to wear a formal ensemble, but knew of the sad reality that others faced.

“It’s that one event that every grade 12 learner looks forward to and should experience. You get to dress up, and you get to feel important before the exams begin. These events are important to have that right of passage for these learners to celebrate themselves before they get into exam season.

“Give whatever you don’t need or use anymore, but we still have to maintain the dignity of these learners. You can’t give things that you wouldn’t wear yourself, so for me it’s really a powerful way of affirming these young learners.”

From an environmental perspective, this initiative is promoting the reuse of fabric as an alternative to recycling.

Thato and his team will collect “gently worn garments” fit for a matric farewell function which include dresses, suits, shoes, and accessories (bags, belts, and jewelry).

Pupils needing items send a request and then are invited on a specific date for free shopping and fittings.

“During fittings one of our Sorbet fashionistas will be present to assist the learners choose and match their garments with the accessories and shoes, and give them a makeover.

“Sorbet is a very proud South African brand that is driven by a higher purpose of changing lives positively. Our tagline ‘get that feeling’ is about making people look and feel good and we saw it fit that we launch this initiative and truly make a difference in the young people’s journey in their final year of school. This initiative supports the fact that we are truly concerned about values that prove inner beauty is important as as the external aesthetics,” HR and culture executive Thembi Mfobela told TshisaLIVE.

There is a dedicated email and WhatsApp number for individuals who wish to donate and pupils in need of garments can submit their requests.
