Authorities in Kerala, India, have responded swiftly to a confirmed case of Nipah virus, a potentially deadly infection. Dr. Anoop Kumar, director of critical care medicine at Aster MIMS Hospital in Calicut, confirmed the diagnosis in a school-going boy. Immediate measures have been taken to monitor and isolate individuals who came into contact with him.
To prevent the spread of the virus, the government has established 25 committees tasked with identifying and isolating affected individuals. Currently, 214 people are being monitored, with 60 classified as high-risk. Isolation wards have been set up in healthcare facilities to manage potential cases.
Following the confirmation in Malappuram, approximately 350km from Kerala’s capital, Thiruvananthapuram, family members of the affected patient were placed under observation in a local hospital. Others at risk have been advised to self-isolate at home.
Dr. Anoop Kumar emphasized that the current risk of an outbreak remains minimal, but vigilance will continue for the next 7-10 days. Kerala has experienced sporadic outbreaks of the Nipah virus since its first appearance in 2018, resulting in fatalities.
Originating in Malaysia 25 years ago, the Nipah virus has caused outbreaks in several countries including Bangladesh, India, and Singapore. The state government actively tracks potentially affected individuals to prevent further virus transmission.
