Controversial cleric Prophet Passion Java has boldly claimed responsibility for the cancellation of Winky D’s highly anticipated Crossover gig, traditionally held at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC) on New Year’s Eve. Java, known for his outspoken nature, stated that he played a key role in the decision to block the event, citing a desire to teach Zimbabwean youths respect for elders.
The cancellation of Winky D’s show came as a shock to many, especially considering that the artist’s management had secured the prestigious venue months in advance, in May 2024. However, reports soon emerged indicating that the venue had been rebooked by businessman Kudakwashe Tagwirei, who reportedly paid $245,000 to secure it for a Seventh Day Adventist Church event on the same date, thus pushing Winky D out.
In an interview with DJ Sparxx and Zigo, Prophet Passion Java didn’t mince words, claiming that he had been one of the driving forces behind the decision. He expressed his dissatisfaction with Winky D, particularly in light of the artist’s controversial remarks during his last New Year’s Eve concert, where Winky D allegedly disrespected Zimbabwe’s President, Emmerson Mnangagwa.
“Winky D anofarisa and problem yekuti ane influence, “Passion Java said, criticizing the artist for using his platform to voice what he perceived as disrespectful comments. “Winky D akanorova speech rake re boxing riya riya ndokubva atanga kudisser President. ‘Wakabvuta chigaro’ and stuff. On his level? Kana imiwo does that make sense? It doesn’t make sense,” he added, implying that Winky D had overstepped by publicly criticizing the President.
According to Passion Java, Winky D’s actions at the time, particularly his criticisms of the President, were seen as an act of disrespect that needed to be addressed. Java explained, “Ndokubva ndarova video ndikati varikukanya number one vanhu varikumupa venue. Number 2, vanhu varikumuplayer kuradio. Handizozivi kuti vanonzi vanani ivava,” indicating that he believed those supporting Winky D were misguided.
The outspoken preacher emphasized that his actions were motivated by a deeper desire to instill respect for authority and elders among young Zimbabweans. “Vanhu vanoplayer ivava vanoita problem because isusu we want next-generation ikure urine culture yemuZimbabwe yekuziva kuti number one hautuke vakuru,” Passion Java stated, stressing that the youth should learn to respect those in positions of authority, both in politics and society. He also added, “Mukuru even akanzi haana kuuya kumba haumubvunze kuti ‘Makarara kupi?’ Mukuru, mukuru. Hautuke mukuru. Hau addresse mukuru. You’re not in that position. You can’t diss even in politics.”
Winky D’s management team had worked diligently to secure the HICC venue months in advance for his traditional Crossover show, a New Year’s Eve performance beloved by many of his fans. However, despite these early arrangements, they were left stunned when the venue was suddenly given to Tagwirei’s Bridging Gaps Foundation for the Seventh Day Adventist Church event. The development left Winky D’s team feeling wronged, as they believed their contract with the venue had been disregarded.
In a statement issued by Winky D’s legal team, they expressed their frustration over the situation. “Our client has issued the following statement regarding the Winky D Crossover Show of 31 December 2024. Winky D remains enthusiastic about delivering an exceptional crossover performance at HICC on December 31, 2024, a venue his fans are very familiar with,**” the statement read.
The statement continued, “His management team secured the venue as early as May 2024 and made all necessary arrangements for the show. Winky D values the connection he has with his fans and is dedicated to providing a memorable performance. However, the venue owners have chosen to prioritize another event on the same date, which unfortunately disregards the agreement established with Winky D.”
Despite the setback, Winky D’s team remained hopeful, asserting that the artist’s commitment to his fans and his dedication to delivering a great performance remained unwavering. The ongoing controversy surrounding the cancellation has ignited a broader conversation about respect, authority, and the role of the digital and entertainment industry in shaping public discourse. Prophet Passion Java’s controversial involvement in the situation is sure to keep people talking, with many questioning whether his actions were driven by genuine concern for Zimbabwean culture, or by personal grievances.
As the dust settles, it remains to be seen how this drama will unfold and what it means for both Winky D’s career and the future of such high-profile events in Zimbabwe.
