Rethabile Khumalo demands answers over missing funeral donations

Rethabile Khumalo, the daughter of the late kwaito legend Winnie Khumalo, has expressed frustration over missing funeral donations that were allegedly collected by amapiano artist Bongani “Mabboza waseTV” Tsime. The incident has sparked controversy within the South African music industry, leaving many questioning the whereabouts of the funds meant to support Winnie Khumalo’s farewell.

Following Winnie Khumalo’s passing on January 7 and her burial on January 18, Tsime reportedly took the initiative to encourage fellow artists to contribute financially toward the funeral costs. Sources claim that he managed to collect approximately R20,000 from various donors. However, Rethabile has yet to receive any of these funds, leading to growing frustration and disappointment.

According to an artist who contributed to the donations, concerns over the missing funds surfaced recently when Rethabile revealed in a WhatsApp group that she had never received the money. “Last week, we learned that Rethabile never received our donations. She told us on the WhatsApp group, and she was frustrated,” the artist shared.

In a message expressing her disappointment, Rethabile Khumalo said, “I don’t understand. I kept quiet for a while, but it’s enough now.” Her words highlight her growing distress over the situation, as she continues to mourn her mother while also dealing with financial uncertainty.

Tsime, however, has denied directly handling the money. In a voice note response, he claimed that the funds were deposited into his nephew’s bank account, who then used the money for his own purposes. “The money was deposited into my nephew’s bank account; unfortunately, he used it,” Tsime explained. Despite being questioned for further clarification, Tsime has remained defensive, even going as far as to threaten legal action. “I never received the money, and I don’t know what they’re talking about,” he insisted.

As the controversy unfolds, Rethabile Khumalo has chosen to remain relatively silent on the matter. Still mourning the loss of her mother, she has opted not to engage in further discussions about the missing funds. “When the time is right, I’ll talk, but for now, I want to be left alone,” she stated.

The situation has left many in the industry disappointed and frustrated. Colleagues and supporters who donated with good intentions are now questioning the accountability of the funds and seeking answers. The lack of transparency has raised concerns over trust among artists when it comes to community-driven financial support.

This unfortunate incident underscores the importance of proper financial management and transparency, particularly when handling donations meant for grieving families. The loss of Winnie Khumalo was a significant blow to the South African music industry, and the last thing her loved ones should have to deal with is the mismanagement of funds intended for her farewell.

As Rethabile Khumalo continues to mourn and seek clarity, it remains to be seen whether the funds will be recovered and whether those responsible will be held accountable. For now, the controversy surrounding the missing donations serves as a reminder of the need for clear financial oversight in situations of communal support.
