Harare was struck by another tragic road accident on Thursday, August 10, when a Toyota Hilux double cab ran over four pedestrians on Sam Nujoma Street (formerly Second Street Extension). The collision, which occurred around 10:00 am opposite Banc ABC, resulted in the deaths of two individuals and left two others injured.
According to the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), the vehicle, which was carrying three passengers, struck the pedestrians as they attempted to cross the busy road. The impact was severe, and the scene was marked by the tragic loss of life. The bodies of the deceased were taken to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals for post-mortem examinations, while the injured pedestrians were also transported to the same hospital for medical treatment.
This incident underscores growing concerns about road safety in Harare, coming just two weeks after a similar tragedy on the Masvingo-Mbalabala Road. In that accident, a Nissan NP200 vehicle veered off the road and hit four pedestrians walking along a footpath, resulting in two deaths and injuries to the driver and two other pedestrians.
In response to these recent accidents, the ZRP has emphasized the need for increased vigilance on the roads. They have urged motorists to exercise caution and strictly adhere to traffic regulations to prevent further tragedies. Pedestrians are also advised to use designated crossing points and remain alert while crossing streets.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of life in these recent accidents. We urge all road users to be responsible and to prioritize safety on our roads,” said a ZRP spokesperson. The police continue to investigate both incidents and are working to enhance road safety measures to protect both drivers and pedestrians.
