In a tragic and unsettling incident, Marshall Ganyau, a 30-year-old digital content creator and pastor, was found murdered following a hijacking in Delft. Ganyau, who had recently completed his studies in theology in Zimbabwe, was celebrating his graduation just days before his untimely death.
Ganyau’s last social media post showed him beaming with pride in his graduation attire, a stark contrast to the somber messages of condolence that followed his death. He was known for his work with Bhoo Here TV, a platform where he shared his digital creations and religious insights.
On September 7, Ganyau was in Delft visiting an acquaintance when three men ambushed him. According to his brother, Elvis Chibvuri, the assailants brandished a gun and forced Ganyau into his car. They then drove off with him to Philippi, where they began to strip his Audi.
Chibvuri recounted the harrowing ordeal, noting the family’s struggle to open a case due to initial fears of witnesses. A witness who saw the abduction immediately alerted a relative, who contacted a tracking company. The vehicle was quickly located in Philippi, but Ganyau was nowhere to be found.
Despite the prompt location of the car, the hijackers managed to evade the police, and the search for Ganyau continued. His family faced additional challenges as they navigated the bureaucratic hurdles of filing a missing person’s report, searching hospitals, and visiting mortuaries. Tragically, Ganyau’s body was discovered on Monday at Salt River Mortuary. Chibvuri described the family’s devastation at the loss of a loved one who had just arrived in Cape Town from Zimbabwe to pursue new opportunities.
Police spokesperson FC van Wyk confirmed that authorities are awaiting feedback from the relevant police station regarding the investigation. This case has added to the recent wave of violent crimes in the area, coming on the heels of condolences offered by Police Oversight and Community Safety MEC Anroux Marais for another hijacking victim, Clinton Treu, who was killed in Elsies River.
Marais had previously highlighted a troubling increase in attempted hijackings, with three such incidents recorded within a week last month. The rise in these violent crimes underscores the urgent need for enhanced community safety measures and effective law enforcement response. As the investigation continues, Ganyau’s family and community are left grappling with their loss and seeking justice for a man whose life was cut short under tragic circumstances.
