AFRICA has been challenged to capitalise on opportunities that come with vast renewable energy sources, amid indications that the continent accounts for 40 percent of the world’s renewable energy sources.
This came out during the third Pan African Parliament Summit on Climate Policy and Equity in Midrand, South Africa.
The summit was graced by Kenyan President His Excellency William Ruto who is also Chairperson of Heads of State and government on climate change.
After deliberations part of the resolution is that the conversation should be around harnessing and adopting the green revolution.
The latest development comes at a time when the continent holds 40 percent of the world’s renewable energy sources which are critical in the industrialisation drive.
“We have been complaining and have legitimate concerns on climate issues, but we need to change, let’s have a different conversation, carbonisation and going green is the issue, we have the assets for green growth, and we are willing to counter the effects, we want our compatriots only to come with technology out of our continents, we need to refine staff from within, using hydro, air, we willing to sell finished products, let us keep what is ours and let us share,” said President Ruto.
Experts believe the continent has what it takes to drive development in a climate-smart way.
“What we have as Africa are resources that can impact positively the development of the continent at the same time preventing environmental harm, it is imperative that the continent position itself to support the global net zero,” said Climate Justice Advisor, Mr Achieford Chemhere.
“We are fortunate that we have got the support of heads of state in parliament to push for sustainable practices. In all the conversations the thinking should be how is the person at the grassroots benefits and survives, this is where the issues of selling carbon credits are there to benefit Africa, Solar energy, carbon wind is Africa’s great resource which the world can benefit from,” said Zimbabwe’s Ambassador to South Africa, Dr Kudzai Bryline Chitsunge.
The Pan African Parliament is expected to come up with an action plan that is set to guide the continent on how to position itself globally in utilising its resources to Africa’s advantage while also sustainably managing the environment for the benefit of the universe.
