Harare, Zimbabwe – The unmistakable voice that has echoed through Zimbabwean households for over three decades – “Rrrrrrrrrueben Barweeeee, ZBC News… Harare!” – is being honoured in true royal fashion. In a heartfelt gesture that has stirred national sentiment, businessman and philanthropist Sir Wicknell Chivayo has gifted veteran journalist Rueben Barwe a brand-new 2025 Toyota Land Cruiser LX 300 Series, along with a generous cash token of US$100,000.

This gesture celebrates the legendary journalist’s unwavering service to Zimbabwean media, recognising a man who has not only reported on the country’s pivotal moments but has also become an inseparable part of its national identity.
Sir Wicknell, known for his grand acts of generosity and patriotism, posted a nostalgic and emotional tribute on Facebook, recalling how Barwe’s iconic sign-off became a cultural phenomenon.
“I remember so vividly in 1987 when I was still in Grade 2, as a young boy watching ZBC TV News at 8 pm on a ‘BLACK AND WHITE’ screen. I’d wait just for that moment when you signed off in STYLE,” he wrote.
From the liberation struggle to the rise of the Second Republic under President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Rueben Barwe has consistently reported the nation’s history with accuracy, professionalism, and a distinct Zimbabwean pride. Whether covering independence celebrations, Heroes Day commemorations, Defence Forces parades, or the sobering days of the COVID-19 pandemic, Barwe’s voice has remained a trusted constant.
Sir Wicknell lauded Barwe not only for his journalistic skill but for his patriotism and resilience:
“You have been CRITICIZED, threatened and tested beyond measure but you stood FIRM, loyal to your profession, loyal to your country and loyal to your people.”
Barwe, now a Chief Correspondent at the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), has served generations of Zimbabweans with news coverage that blends clarity, authority, and an unmistakable personal touch. His signature sign-off has been echoed in homes, schools, and even street corners, becoming a symbol of trustworthy reporting in the country.

To keep you afloat, a small token of US$100,000 in cash pocket money is also ready for collection from my lawyer, Mr. Sikhumbuzo Mpofu.”
The gesture has been widely applauded across social media, with many Zimbabweans celebrating both Sir Wicknell’s generosity and Barwe’s enduring contribution to the nation.
As Zimbabwe moves forward, voices like Barwe’s remind the nation of its shared history, triumphs, and challenges. This moment is not just about a car or a cash gift – it is about honouring a man who, for more than 30 years, has been the voice of Zimbabwe.
