Pictures: Government builds a shrine in Gutu

The Ministry of Information Publicity and Broadcasting Services has announced that the government is building a memorial shrine in Gutu in remembrance of some 105 villagers who perished in 1978.

“On 14 May 1978 during a pungwe rally, there was a surprise attack by Rhodesian soldiers at Kamunhoma in Gutu. 105 villagers including one guerrilla died. National Museums and Monuments is building the Kamunhoma Shrines.” The Ministry said.

The Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Cain Ndabazekhaya Ginyilitshe Mathema toured the site on Thursday.

The shrine is created at a time when Gukurahundi victims have been pleading with the government to allow them to erect monuments to remember their departed.
